The specialised engineering requirements of those components which in service are subjected to internal pressure have been recognised for many years. Recently this recognition has become even more pronounced: the increasingly severe demands of advancing technology have led to the subject of pressure vessel engineering being considered as almost a separate branch of engineering science and industry.
Pressure vessel engineering makes stringent demands on the skills of the suppliers of steel plate, forgings and welding consumables of the' designer and stress analyst, of the materials engineer, especially with respect to consideration of possible modes of failure, of the welding and fabrication expert and of the specialists in non-destructive inspection. For any one person to be thoroughly versed in all of these aspects is difficult, and this book is intended to help specialists in one field to learn of the stage of development of another, and to provide an overall picture to those with general interests.
There has been much talk of a more 'rational' basis for pressure vessel design, presumably implying less reliance on arbitrary or empirical code rules. The layout of this book is intended to help such an approach. Starting from the conventional design approach, successive chapters detail the . requirements needed to prevent failure by fatigue, creep and brittle fracture. After dealing with general aspects of material selection, fabrication and inspection techniques, some specific problems are covered in the chapters relating to the design and manufacture of vessels for very high pressure, for nuclear reactors and for aerospace. The final chapter highlights the problems that can occur in practice by quoting examples of faults and failures that have been experienced. Vissza
