But 1956 was only a beginning. In The New Eastern Europe: The Khrushchev Era and After, J. F. Country by country—Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania—Mr. Brown surveys the important political, economic, and cultural developments that signaled this turning point in the history of Communism.
Studying each state both individually and as a part of the Communist world, he searches for the signs of growing independence in the satellites' political and economic policies, their role in comecon, their relations with the West, their attempts at agricultural and industrial advancement, and their cultural outlook. He evaluates the influence of Yugoslavia's revisionism and Romania's success in sustaining policies independent of the Soviet leadership. Lastly, Mr. Brown examines the varying responses among East European Communists to the challenge of the Peking regime, to the East-West détente, to Khrushchev's fall, and to his successors.
Under Khrushchev, writes Mr. Brown, the nations of Eastern Europe won a degree of freedom in their relations with each other, the Soviet Union, and the non-Communist West that rendered the term "satellite," in certain cases, something of a misnomer. Furthermore, with the emergence of a doctrinal dispute between Moscow and Peking, the East European states discovered they could obtain additional concessions from the Soviet Union by threatening to support the Chinese. In the future, contends' Mr. Brown, the force of economic circumstance and the needs of an industrial and technical world will bring even greater freedom to these states.
THE AUTHOR: J. F. Brown is a specialist on East European affairs and has written articles on the area for such publications as Survey, The New Republic, and Encounter. He has also contributed chapters to The Communist States at the Crossroads and Talking to Eastern Europe.
