Students of literature or history would often benefit from fuller knowledge of the relevant background material behind the topics they study. The aim of the Context and Commentary series is to meet the needs of these students, as well as those whose interdisciplinary work may embrace both subjects. Each volume contains selected passages from both the primary historical documentation of the period and the imaginative literature relating to it. Key passages of prose and poetry are represented and linked by a commentary which places the material in its broader setting. In this way the study of both literature and history should be enhanced.
