The author of this text on Celje has, in harmony with the nature of his material, chosen a broad cultural-historical approach to introduce his readers to the centuries-long of the history of the town. The town has played an exceptionally important role on the historical stage at least twice: first in the classical era, and secondly in that of the Counts and Princes of Celje, not to mention its vigorous period of development after the Second World War. The choice of author has certainly been a fortunate one. Ivan Stopar shows that he is not only thoroughly acquainted with the wealth of material available but has also mastered a method of presentation which can attract
a reader and paint a vivid picture of the town through a portrayal of the historical progress of periods and events in and around it. The text is interwoven with documentary material ranging from archival extracts to recent statistical data, all couched in a fluent and readable style.

Celje is already well represented in Yugoslav historical and topographical literature, but we can confirm that we have not so far had the opportunity of enjoying such a detailed picture of the town and its history. The author has gone far beyond his specialist field and, through the broad and informative approach he has adopted, has written his most complex work to date, a work which will receive a warm welcome from the public.
