This second set of 12 titles (6 fiction and 6 nonfiction) shares the same basic aims as the originál series. The books provide material for comprehension and composition work and are graded into the same six stages as the Longman Structural Readers. They can be used successfully with any standard course for secondary or aduit students. There are two books at each level: one with fictional passages and one with factual. As before, it will be found that comprehension and composition work can be introduced successfully at a very early stage in a course and the passages have again been kept short so that they may be presented and exploited within the time limits of the average lesson. The two-page units have been retained with a passage from 70 to 300 words on the left-hand page and exercises on the right-hand page. Somé important refinements incorporated in the new set of titles include: • vivid presentation of the texts, particularly non-fiction ones • non-fiction texts now take a great variety of form, ranging from dialogue to purely visual • a greater variety of exercises: multiple choice is now a much smaller element than in the originál series and there are additional exercises on the use of English • composition writing is introduced from Stage 1 onwards, parallel to Guided Summary, and is carefully controlled A Teacher's Book will be published when all twelve titles have appeared and will contain a key to the exercises in the Students' Books and notes on the most effective methods of presenting the material in the classroom.
