Fülszöveg

Italy is the world's sixth economic power, lies in a key geopolitical position, and was a founding member of the Atlantic Alliance and the European Community. Yet of all the major European states Italy is the least understood and studied. This book provides the best up-to-date survey of the Italian political scene during the forty years since World War II. It describes the inner dynamics of the political parties, the day-to-day functioning of the governing institutions, and the interaction of the country's economic, social, and political life. It shows how a political system, riven with difficulties and seemingly in a continual crisis, survives and prospers - in some ways more successfully than its purportedly better-governed neighbors. Based on the authors' first-hand observations of Italian politics, the book offers a valuable insight into a subtle and complex, but fascinating political world.

"This book, which is presented as a survey of Italian politics, is actually much more than that. It is a well-informed, shrewd, critical, yet compassionate analysis of Italy's pohtical system, of her economic and social transformation and of her foreign policy. Above all, it examines the many obstacles that have impeded effective government and reform without actually destroying the ship of state or preventing the success of Italy's post-war democracy." Stanley Hoffmann, Douglas Dillon Professor of the Civilization of France,
Harvard University
"A highly readable, well-informed, and provocative study of the Italian puzzle. Spotts and Wieser grasp and convey the essential."
Gianfranco Pasquino, Professor of Political Science, University of Bologna, and
Senator of the Republic of Italy
FREDERIC SPOTTS is a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of International Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He was a Research Associate at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University in 1980-1984. From 1960 to 1980 he was a member of the American diplomatic service and served in Paris, Bonn, Washington, and Rome.
THEODOR WIESER is the Neue Zürcher Zeitung correspondent for Italy and the Vatican. A foreign correspondent for the NZZ since 1951, he has served in Berlin, Algeria, Spain, Bonn, and, since 1971, Rome. Among his reporting awards are Premio Sardegna (1975), Ehrengabe des Kantons Zürich (1978). Vissza
