In 1969 the sculpture collection of the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts came into the limelight of international attention when participants of the XXII. Congress of Art Historians, attended by prominent scholars, professors and museum directors, agreed with the conclusion of Mária G. Aggházy's research that the museum's equestrian statue is indeed an authentic work by Leonardo da Vinci. Besides the single extant maquette of the perished statue of the great Renaissance master, the museum alsó houses outstanding works by other famous sculptors, among them Andrea Pisano, Agostino di Duccio, Luca, Andrea, and Giovanni della Robbia, Benedetto da Maiano, Andrea del Verrocchio, Jacopo Sansovino, and Andrea Riccio. The sculptures described in this volume illustrate the development of plastic art from the eleventh century through the eighteenth century. The volume is devoted primarily to the Italian sculpture collection of the Museum which is the most significant both in its size and quality, but it alsó includes those examples of Spanish sculpture which bear stylistic resemblance to the Italian works. Mária G. Aggházy analyses these sculptures, at the same time describing the development of Italian sculpture of the period. An accompanying volume has alsó been planned to deal with the old statues in the museum from north of the Alps. The book contains 48 colour plates and 17 black-and-white illustrations. Vissza
