The art of Finland is undeservedly little known abroad. Yet this medieval art, which flowered under Church patronage, contains some of the finest of European religious and secular sculpture, stone carving and murals. Despite its distance from the mainstream of the European art of that time Finland successfully combined traditional styles with those European influences that managed to penetrate into this isolated country.
