On the threshold of the 1990s visitors to Hungary— whether from East or West—will find it a country of sharply contrasting moods. Some believe the barometer is set fair, others that it is due to fall. We do not pretend to be able to resolve this problem, but the country is open: people can come and interpret matters as they see fit. And people are coming. Hungary receives ten and half million tourists per year,
a number equal to the size of the population. This book aims to give the visitor a brief historical basis for his interpretation. It deals with all the major events in the country's history, from the distant past through to the present day, from the foundation of the Hungarian state to the approaching 1100th anniversary of the original conquest. Born in Sárospatak in 1933, István Lázár was trained as a geologist but has spent most of his life as a journalist. He moved to Budapest in 1955 and for a quarter of a century he has been one of the editors of Valóság, a journal of the social sciences. His previous books include travelogues based on journeys to England and round the Dalmatian Coast, a biography of the novelist, István Örkény, and a volume of interviews conducted with leading Hungarian political figures. His major work though is a sociographic study of the famous wine growing region of Sárospatak and Tokaj.
