Issues in computer-adaptive testing of reading proficiency is an important resource for those interested in the latest research on and development of CAT instruments for assessing the receptive skills, mainly reading. This volume includes the work of noted scholars from several fields who explore timely issues regarding CAT. The chapters are grouped into three major sections: L2 reading construct, L2 CAT applications and considerations, and item response theory (IRT) measurement issues. Discussion chapters are included after each of the three sections to highlight and discuss the issues raised by the authors in their respective chapters as well as those of relevance in the other chapters. The book also provides a critical discussion of CAT practices from the point of view of performance assessment.

Micheline Chalhoub-Deville is Assistant Professor in the Foreign Language and ESL Education Program at the University of Iowa. Since 1994, she has directed several federaUy-funded projects for developing proficiency-based assessment instruments and computer-adaptive testing. She has received the International Language Testing Association Award for Best Article Published on Language Testing in 1995.
