The Emerald Isle Ireland undoubtedly is, but it is also a wide spectrum of other colours besides green. More important in the context of a book of colour photographs, Ireland is a country of clouds and mists, of half-tones and fugitive sunlight effects. These are nuances peculiarly difficult for a photographer to capture. That Noel Habgood has so triumphantly succeeded in doing so gives further support to the claim that he is the finest living photographer of landscape in Britain. Here his work has been reproduced with a fidelity which suggests that a clear glass window, rather than the photographer's lens and film, stands between the viewer and the reality.
The subjects which Noel Habgood pictures are those which most typify Ireland: the Four Courts and the Custom House in Dublin; Grand Parade in Cork and the Shannon at Limerick; the Lakes of Killarney and the Giant's Causeway; the notable mountains: the Mournes, Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Mount Brandon, Ben Bulben; the marvellous... The subjects which Noel Habgood pictures are those which most typify Ireland: the Four Courts and the Custom House in Dublin; Grand Parade in Cork and the Shannon at Limerick; the Lakes of Killarney and the Giant's Causeway; the notable mountains: the Mournes, Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Mount Brandon, Ben Bulben; the marvellous sea coast at Slea Head, Slieve League, Portstewart, Annalong and the Cliffs of Moher; and such noble relics of Ireland's past as the High Cross at Monasterboice, Mellifont Abbey, Bunratty Castle and—it goes without saying—Blarney Castle. Interspersed amongst these memorable scenes are other pictures ranging from the grandeur of the Connemara landscape and the intimacy of Dan's Bar at Dunfanaghy to the civic presence of the Parliament Buildings in Belfast.
In his Introduction Terence Sheehy pins down the elusive qualities of history, character, landscape and attitude which together give Ireland her identity. Extended commentaries on each of the 30 illustrations add an extra dimension of understanding to some strikingly beautiful views.
