INTRODUCTION TO QUALITY CONTROL Recommendation By J. M. Jurán, Chairman Emeritus, Jurán Institute, Inc. It is good news that Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa's book, Introduction to Quality Control (IQC), is to become available in the English language. The earlier editions of IQC, published in Japanese in 1954 and 1964, ran into about a hundred printings and a great many copies. Those copies provided a basic textbook for training very large numbers of Japanese in the basics of quality control. The Third Edition, published in Japanese in 1988, updated and expanded the work to take account of the intervening new developments. The English edition now makes this Japanese classic available to Western readers. Dr. Ishikawa's association with the subject of quality dates from 1949, when he joined the quality control research group of the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE), until his passing in 1989. During those 40 years he contributed extensively to the training of two generations of Japanese in quality control. Translations of his works became influential inputs to training courses in numerous foreign countries as well. Foreign demand for his services made him the leading Japanese ambassador on the subject of quality, and provided him with a firm grasp of how quality is achieved in a wide spectrum of cultures. Users of the English translation will discover that the basic concepts set out by Dr. Ishikawa are essentially the same as those which have been evolved in the West. They will alsó learn the content of what has long been a major training source for the Japanese revolution in quality. That training source has undergone countless field tests and feedbacks. It can be regarded as reflecting the realities faced by the trainees. Users should alsó note that the organization of the subject matter and the definitions of somé key words reflect their unique Japanese origin. For example, the term "Totál Quality Control" as used in Japan retains its originál connotation of including all the activities associated with achieving superior quality. In contrast, the most usual all-embracing term in the West is currently "Totál Quality Management." Western usage tends to limit the meaning of the word "control" to the process associated with the quality feedback loop, and thereby excludes the processes of quality planning and quality improvement. Leaders of training courses should be on the alert for such differences in the meaning of key words. We are all in debt to the late Dr. Ishikawa for his untiring efforts to reduce quality knowhow to simple terms and then to reduce his findings to writing. Those who are faced with designing or teaching training courses in quality control will find his Introduction to Quality Control an authoritative source book. Vissza
