This is a collection of interpretive essays on major works, major writers, and a few major strains of American literature. It is designed to give both the student and the inquiring reader new perspectives on our best known authors and their works.
All of the essays are of relatively recent date, and illustrate vividly the variety of methods and preoccupations in today's discussions of American writing. The collection represents some of the finest contemporary critical thinking, and includes articles by such eminent scholars as Allen Tate, Lionel Trilling, and Alfred Kazin.
The Editors
Charles Feidelson, Jr. is Professor of English at Yale University. Following his graduation from Yale, he studied for a year at Cambridge, later returning to Yale for his doctorate.
