Around the year 1400, at the beginning of the modern cultural era-or at the waning of the Middle Ages, as Huizinga describes it-a uniform artistic style emerged in most of the leading countries of Europe. Today we regard the homogeneity of the artistic style as beyond dispute, although the people of that period and their immediate successors did not see it in those terms. It is only since the end of the nineteenth century that it has attracted the attention of scholars, and now its importance in the history of art is universally recognized. This refined and lyrical style was ideally suited to the taste of the aristocratic and noble households which dominated European culture at that period. This taste is well exemplified by Gentile da Fabriano's famous picture The Adoration of the Magi, which combines its biblical theme with a representation of princely magnificence. But in addition to these characteristics of style the period brought its own innovations, such as the devotional picture intended for use in priváté worship. New themes emerged, such as the Vir Dolorum, or Man of Sorrows, and the hortus conclusus, or enclosed garden. There were alsó changes in artistic practices; sketch-books, those rich stores of personal observation, ousted the standard model-books. This book introduces the reader to the work of somé of the anonymous artists of the period, together with the work of such outstanding masters as the Limbourg brothers, Gentile da Fabriano, Thomas de Coloswar, Konrád von Soest, Pisanello and the Catalan Bernardo Martor ell. On the jacket: Master of the Rohan Prayer-book: Lament over the Dead Christ, c. 1418 Second edition Vissza
