This book is an opportunity to do just that, to work alongside this most sought-after designer in some of the private homes he has transformed—from a London apartment done on a shoestring to a Scottish hunting lodge where money was no object. On the way you discover how Banks-Pye meets each new challenge and turns his ideas into stunning reality. It is the closest alternative to hiring a professional to make over your home.
This inspirational and invaluable book structures the designer's thoughts, extracting the way he thinks about all the fundamental elements of designing interiors—from the basic structure and working with pattern and color to furnishings, display, and lighting. With the help of hundreds of color photographs that give glimpses into some of the world's most exclusive interiors, it delves behind many brilliant schemes to give a breakdown of Roger's unique and often irreverent approach to solving particular problems of space. Have you ever considered, for example, laying top-quality chintz on the floor instead of carpet or sticking torn squares of Japanese paper onto a wall to create dramatic checks or using a fabric wrong sidt out for a muted effect? Roger's ideas are intriguing and refreshing, but they are always functional and comfort is vital. There are accessible, practical, and realistic tips to be picked up from every one of his ideas.
