INTERCULTURAL LEARNING
A RESOURCE BOOK
FOR PRIMARY TEACHERS OF ENGLISH
Intercultural learning is about discovering other cultures and in the process of doing
so, gaining insights into your own culture. The foreign language class provides an
appropriate context for developing it, all the more so when children learn through
topic and activity-based approach.
The materials in this book are a result of a school-based writing project set up and
supported by the British Council in 1998-99. Taking part were 17 practising primary
teachers working in small groups supported by 6 co-ordinators (also practising
teachers) in different regions of Hungary.
Some comments from the teacher-writers who tried the themes with their class:
"My pupils found the topic interesting and challenging After teaching the lessons I felt
very satisfied with my pupils who were active and involved all the time. "
"My students recognised the importance of our intercultural lessons. Their... Tovább

"My pupils found the topic interesting and challenging After teaching the lessons I felt
very satisfied with my pupils who were active and involved all the time. "
"My students recognised the importance of our intercultural lessons. Their curiosity helped
them in spite of the fact that sometimes they had some problems with the new words and
expressions. "
"The parents were not only understanding but helpful."
"They enjoyed this lesson very much. They had fun acquiring the new vocabulary very
easily through the games and songs."
"If children have pleasant memories connected with learning about their own culture,
I think they will have more enthusiasm for learning about other cultures."
"It was a surprisingly new idea for me and for the students to study Hungarian rhymes and
songs in order to compare them with English ones."
"The children enjoyed the topic. They brought a lot of books and pictures I was pleased
with the way they responded to the material At the end the children evaluated the topic
and the activities, and they said they would like to learn more about dogs or work on simi-
lar topics." Vissza
