It is only during times of deep cynicism that a voice of reason can emerge to show the silver lining that has been overlooked, the lining many have begun to believe cannot exist. It is only a voice of pure charisma, scholarship, and determination that can break through the bleak outlook to prove the survival of possibility and demonstrate the argument for hope. From Columbia professor Robert Thurman, named one of Time magazine's twenty-five most influential people of 1997, comes just such a powerful message.
Inner Revolution shows that it is a misunderstanding of reality that produces the cynicism we now live with. The Western worldview has taken root through a view of history that sees wars as its landmarks; a view of society indicating that we should expect the worst of one another; a view of life as a one-time, meaningless event. Enlightenment scientists, as Thurman calls those who have followed in the footsteps of the Buddha, have left behind a method for proving just the opposite. Other histories and the empirical exploration of reality and the psyche by the Buddha demonstrate that the worldview the West has inherited is nothing but a trick of our own imaginations.
While the rest of the world turned to outer technology, to science and industry, places such as Tibet and, much earlier, India were establishing "enlightenment factories," institutions devoted to helping the individual reach total happiness and fulfillment, as part of the backbone of government and community. Inner Revolution reveals the principles of the movement to celebrate

individual liappiness, which tlic Buddli.i initiated 2,500 years ago, and shows how to continue it. This is a deeply intelligent primer on practical Buddhism, written in the engaging contcxt ol a completely original understanding of the history of civilization.
Thurman's passion is for turning people on to the Buddha's message that everyone has the opportunity to become Fully completely happy, and for that part of history that created this inner science—a science that has quietly but persistently produced enlightened individuals, communities, and whole societies. Inner Revolution finds hope in history, fascinating lessons in Tibetan Buddhism, and a viable way to change the world.
Robert A. F. Thurman, Ph.D., a college professor and writer for thirty years, holds the first endowed chair in Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies in America. He is co-founder and president of Tibet House New York, a cultural nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the endangered civilization of Tibet. The first Western Tibetan Buddhist monk, he shares a thirty-five-year friendship with the Dalai Lama. He has written a number of books, and he lectures internationally Father of five children (including the actress Uma), he lives with his wife, Nena, in New York City
