The author also discusses the major problems which this research has encountered and suggests directions for future work. The theme of social inequality is divided into sections on income and property, employment, education, housing, illness and death. An additional chapter, which cuts across these categories, deals with inequalities between social strata and classes. The book thus pulls together large amounts of specialised research in areas not often brought into the same context. The author finally attempts to develop a number of arguments about the relationship between industrialisation and social inequality, which are likely to stimulate further debate.
