The island nation of Indonesia balances equal parts custom and change. It comprises 13,000 to 17,000 islands (the number varies with high and low tides), stretches 3,000 miles from east to west, and is home to more than 200 million people. Traditions such as the barong dance and batik fabric dyeing coexist with the gleaming skyscrapers that proclaim the country one of East Asia's emerging capitals. The visual fields of art, architecture, and design both influence and are influenced by the multifaceted culture of the nation; in fact, there are as many design sources and resources in Indonesia as there are islands.

Indonesia: Design and Culture explores four of the largest and most populated Islands of the archipelago; Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Bali. Beautiful all-color photographs document houses new and old, as well as their furnishings and decoration. The owners and designers—who range from the son of the first president of Indonesia to a Javanese ceramiclst, from an expatriate Australian landscaper to a Ballnese hotelier—offer insights into the creation of each of these personal works. The myriad stylistic references include Dutch colonialism and modernism as well as traditional Ballnese pavilions and wood structures crowned with the fantastic multlpointed roofs of Sumatra's Mlnangkabau people.
Interspersed with the more than twenty houses are presentations of important historic and cultural sites, such as the Buddhist monument of Borobudur and the Hindu temple complex of Prambanan. Also Included are eighteen photo essays that show elements of dally life throughout the islands: wayang kulit shadow puppets, dally food markets, carvings, rice fields. The diversity and vitality of the fascinating country of Indonesia are singularly paralleled by the rich presentation and exceptional photography of Indonesia: Design and Culture. Vissza
