This synthesis of the Indian history of a large and important géographie area for the period from 1300 to 1800 explores the whole of the High Plains from Canada to Texas and northern Mexico, recounting the struggle for power and territory that in-volved Athapascan, Caddoan, Shoshonean, Kiowan, Alkonkian, and Siouan speaking tribes.
From 1300 to 1700 the Apaches and their Navaho cousins had the pivotai roles, but with the decline of Apache power after 1700, the Comanches and their northern kinsmen, the Snakes, carne to the fore, until they in turn were swept aside by others, notably the Blackfeet and the Sioux.
