After World War II, Japan's traditions began to disappear In order to preserve the ancient arts and allow them to continue, the Japanese decided to honor their Living National Treasures-masters who had devoted their lives to traditional crafts and the performing arts. Each was provided with grants to support his or her lifelong work and to train apprentices.
