This ycar [the American Bar Association] honors thosc around the woríd currently engaged in the democratic strugglc for justice. Particularly worthy of honor arc the lawyers and judges whose cases are detailed in this report. These individuals have shown remarkable courage in the face of great professional and personal risk. In trying to meet their professional duties, they have placed themselves in the front line of the strugglc for justice. From the Introduction
There is no hierarchy of victims of humán rights violations. When they arc harassed, tortured, jailed or killed, pcople who earn their livings in factories, in offices, on farms, arc all centra! in the concerns of humán rights advocates. Why, then, this annual report on the victimization of lawyers and judges? First, as a Lawyers Committee, we are specially attuned to the humán rights rolcs and concerns of our coUeagues everywhere. Second, and more importantly, we should attend particularly to assaults upon judges and lawyers for their enforcement and advocacy of humán rights. The law and its uses are cornerstones for the support of humán rights. Thosc who persecute legal professionals for humán rights advocacy know and intend that their assaults will threaten these foundations.
