Unlike many illustrated books on Austria published in recent years, this work is not a sequence of sights —that would more become an illustrated guidebook —nor do the colour pictures constitute a critical, all-embracing, realistic portrayal of Austrian everyday life. The "unspoilt" side, shielded from industry and from tourist commercialization, has been captured here quite deliberately: old farming land where the atmosphere can still be sensed, town centres whose original appearance is still intact, where history still permeates every wall, customs kept up in their original form and not paraded for advertising purposes. They show one side, the romantic side that one can still see today, if one wishes. Thus the pictures would also have merited the title "Beauty in Austria". In the introduction Humbert Fink characterizes in his inimitable way the scenery, the historical developments and the inhabitants in all their diversity from the Alemannic area to the borders of Pannónia.
