Anna Barskaya (1909—1984), one of the authors of this volume, was an acknowledged expert on French art. She combined the gift of critical assessment with a careful, loving approach to every painting of merit. Her keen interest in new artistic developments never clashed with her deep-rooted predilections in the sphere of arts. The boldness, sometimes even harshness, of her judgement went hand in hand with a talent for sorting out the most subtle nuances, whether in art or in human relationships.
The time she lived in largely shaped her character and decided her fate. In her younger days she was drawn to the poets Mayakovsky, Pasternak and Khlebnikov, to the stage director Meyerhold and the Con-structivist art of the twenties. In 1935, she joined the staff of the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad where she would work till the end of her life. One of the Soviet Union's foremost authorities on Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, she devoted over forty years to the study of this eventful period in the history of European art. She combined a profound, wide-ranging knowledge with a dedication to meticulous research, striving in her works for conceptual clarity. To a large extent, the success of her scholarly endeavours stems from the fact that, in the innermost depths of her nature, Barskaya shared much with the artists whose work she admired and studied, including Cézanne, Manet, Monet, Gauguin and Matisse. She has left us a rich legacy of books, articles, numerous exhibition catalogues, and a nearly completed monograph on Edouard Manet.
