TERRA AUSTRAUS, the great South Land — ancient, mysterious, a vast island-continent floating silently beneath the old world. Home of a race of hunter-gatherers, unique animal and planflife, and abundant and colourful birdlife, the land was settled by Europeans two hundred years ago.
From the time of European explorers, through the penal settlements, the arrival of free settlers, and the great wave of post-war immigration from Europe and Britain, Australia has emerged in the second half of the twentieth century as a young nation with increasing confidence in its own identity. A new appreciation of the uniqueness of her heritage, both environmental and cultural, has re.sulted in the shaking off of that 'outpost of Empire' feeling. Australia has come of age.

The harsh natural beauty is here, but so, too, is a more gentle aspect of the landscape — a winter scene in the Grampians, early morning mist over the Glenelg River in sowth-western Victoria. Here, too, are some of our unique plants, animals and birds. European settlement, past and present, is .symbolised by the ruins of the penal settlements at Port Arthur and Port Macquarie, and Sydney's Opera House and Harbour Bridge by night. The people are here in all their variety of lifestyle and occupation — an Aboriginal man at Ayers Rock, race-goers at Oakbank, Country Fire Service Volunteers in the Adelaide Hills, locals in the Birdsville pub, mechanics at Leigh Creek and miners at Roxby Downs.
