IFOR was set up as a result of the Dayton Accords - the agreement that finally established peace in Bosnia. Some extracts from IFOR on IFOR
"To serve with all the soldiers in Multi-National Division North is a great honour and privilege. For the American soldier, I would just as
soon have you for a son or a daughter than I would for a soldier. They're great people, they're committed to doing their damnedest to achieving peace in Bosnia" Major General Mash, Commander of Task Force Eagle, US Army
"Hopefully Mladic will shoot himself. I don't think the people would bitch if we took Karadzic because they believe he stabbed them in the back at Dayton. But Mladic, I was told, attempted suicide once and maybe he'll carry it out this time, and do it right, and save IFOR a lot of problems. End it, and make the world a bright and shiny place."
Sergeant Boswell, US Army Scouts, 4-12 Infantry
"The big difference with IFOR is that there ain't going to be a war. If IFOR was here before, in Srebrenica, nobody would have died. The Serbs just took over, in front of UN forces. The Americans are the ones who had to break the ice, to say 'STOP - this is enough, it's the end.' " Radmilo Pantic, translator with US Army 2nd Brigade
"It's a lot more low key than in Northern Ireland, you have to be a bit
more friendly, learning how to speak to people, to deal with their everyday needs, to look after people. Being in infantry is definitely the best job in the army, we're the brunt of everything, the front end, we do what I think is basically the good work."
