Many individuals may undergo periods of immunocompromise, during which they will be at increased risk of infection. The management of infection varies according to the degree of immune impairment: the mildly immunocompromised patient can usually be managed conventionally, by awaiting the results of culture and susceptibility tests and then initiating specific antimicrobial therapy. At the opposite extreme, the severely immunocompromised patient requires specialised preventive measures to reduce the probability of infection. Where infection is suspected, an empirical regimen is initiated, followed by specific management based on the response to therapy and a range of microbiological investigations.
This fully referenced monograph discusses the management of mild, moderate or severe impairment of host defence in a practical and clinically orientated way.
