This new commentary was begun through the cooperation of New Testament scholars in Europe, South Africa and America under the general editorial direction of the late Dr. Ned Stonehouse, Professor of New Testament, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. The commentary is being brought to completion under the direction of F. F. Bruce, Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis, University of Manchester, England. The commentary is being brought to completion under the direction of F. F. Bruce, Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis, University of Manchester, England. The several volumes already published have come to be regarded by ministers and scholars as authoritative works that will give direction to conservative New Testament scholarship for years to come, fulfilling the need for a commentary "which, while conversant with the modern critical assaults, draws from the Scripture the ancient faith."
Serving the interests of both pastor and scholar, the introductions and expositions proper are written exclusively in English. They are, however, based on a thorough study of the Greek text. Textual problems especially significant for the interpreter are evaluated, and the most important exegetical literature is taken into account. Supplementing theexposition, the more technical aspects, including grammatical, textual and historical problems, appear in footnotes and special notes or appendices.

THE EPISTLES OF
JOHN
I. HOWARD MARSHALL
John's most valuable contribution to Christian thought, I. Howard Marshall emphasizes in this commentary, is his understanding of faith. Faith is based on the truth of Christ, and must have a proper understanding of Jesus as the Son of God. It is not to be separated from a love for the brethren, for love without faith is not true Christian love. Faith, as John sees it, is expressed in righteousness and is linled finally with an assurance of eternal life.
This volume includes an Invitation geared for the general reader as well as an Introduction addressed more particularly to the scholar. Professor Marshall always has the modern reader in mind as he interprets and applies John's message to our contemporary situation.
A warm welcome awaits Dr. Howard Marshall's commentary on the Johannine Epistles. His scholarship is impeccable, his style clear, and he faces difficulties head on. This book will fill a real need for a conservative but up-to-date commentary on an important section of Scripture.
—Leon Morris, Principal Ridley College, University of Melbourne
I. Howard Marshall, Senior Lecturer in New Testament Exegesis at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, is the author of I Believe in the Historical Jesus, editor of New Testament Interpretation, and has recently completed a commentary on Luke {New International Greek Testament Commentary) to be published in the Fall of 1978.
