Robert Graves' magnificent reconstruction of the grandeur
and folly and vileness of early Imperial Rome is one of the
most distinguished historical novels of this generation, its
setting varies from a Roman palace, law-court, amphitheatre,
Senate House, temple, and library, to a desert in Tripoli, a
dark German forest, a garden at Pompeii, a Roman camp in
the Balkans, the Sibyl's cavern at Cumae, and a cliff-top on
the island of Rhodes. The action is strange, tragic, and
ludicrous, for Rome knows herself under a long-standing
curse - the curse of the gods with whom she broke faith
when she destroyed Carthage - and has lost all moral self-
control. Poison, blasphemy, treachery, incest, black magic,
and unnatural vice flourish. Insane cruelties are committed.
And through it all moves the strange, lovable figure of
Claudius himself, despised, neglected, and apparently
ineffective, but destined in the end to become Emperor
against his will.
