The author describes the phenomena that occur in pipe networks when one (or more) hydraulic controls is in operation. Different methods of analysing the flow behaviour are presented, but the main concentration is on the method of characteristics.
Detailed attention is given to the methods of dealing with boundary conditions such as reservoirs, junctions, valves, air vessels and surge tanks, as well as a variety of pumps. Some of the methods of dealmg with pumps were developed by the author.
The effect of bubble content on wave speed is explained and a description of how bubbles may be recruited from dissolved gas is also given. The importance of including wave-speed variation in calculations is also emphasised.
A method of programming a computer to handle any pipe network is outlined. Resonance theory is also presented with particular attention to the development of its fundamental equations.
