Here's the pick of Ronald Searle's inimitable humorous drawings, so well known to the readers of Lilliput, Punch, The Tatler, Radio Times and many other magazines. Mr. Searle is by way of being Founder and Chairman of Governors of that Young Ladies' Academy sans pareil-St. Trinian's. Ronald Searle is a native of Cambridge and published his first cartoon in the Cambridge Daily News when, like a certain young lady in this book, he was "onley fifteen". His drawings have been made in many parts of the world, under a diversity of conditions; more than 150 of them during the years he was a prisoner of war in Japanese hands. The origins of his schoolgirl cartoons are decently obscure, but it is known that the windows of the School of Art at which he studied overlooked the playground of a girls' school, and that Searle's seat was next to the window. Mr. Searle alsó paints serious pictures and recently held an exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in London. He says that he gets his best ideas after going to bed. In the dark he picks on subjects at random, thinking up stupid situations and doodling them on to the pad under his pillow. If they stand up to the cold light of morning, he completes them. He now lives on Campden Hill in the heart of the Chesterton country. N.B.
