Seventy years ago, any hunter with time and money could hunt, more or less, in any part of the world that he chose. Today, the hunter's world has shrunk, and although the jet age has reduced the duration of an overseas safari from months to days, many parts of the eastern world have closed their doors to the visiting sportsman, who must now content himself with hunting some of these eastern deer as exotics in the western world and elsewhere. Despite the reduced population of so many species, deer in general have a much wider distribution than at the beginning of the last century. Nonetheless, anyone contemplating a deerhunt overseas must plan the trip with the utmost care and with meticulous attention to such details as costs, dates of dcerhunting seasons, firearm licences and other necessary permits.
The author provides comprehensive coverage of all dcerhunting areas on a country-by-country basis, dealing with every species in any given country, and traces that country's dcerhunting tradition. The range of each species is given, as are the open and close seasons, legislation, fines, regulations and licences, and local customs. There is a chapter on the different formulae for measuring antlers, appendices on trophy awards and useful contacts for each country. In fact, here is everything a deerhunter should know if he is to get the maximum enjoyment and results out of his time spent abroad.
Kenneth Whitehead is superbly qualified to write this book, having hunted worldwide for over 40 years. This work perfectly complements Hunting & Stalking Deer in Britain through the Ages, published by Batsford in 1980, and which has already established itself as the standard work on the subject.
