What is the legacy of Hungárián reform communism? Which are the positive and negative elements of the transition process? What objective and subjective factors have been responsible for the immense setback in the country's economic performance during the early years of the transition? What are the prospects for socio-economic development in the coming decade? Relying on their former research and on several background studies, the two authors of this book give an answer to each of these questions. They analyse the most important dimensions of social existence, namely economy, politics, income differentiation, health care, education, science and technology, and alsó the régiónál aspects. Based on an abundance of facts, the analyses of the past events and their possible implications for the future contribute to a better understanding of the very complex socio-economic processes going on in Hungary today. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Éva Ehrlich, Doctor of Economic Sciences, who graduated from the University of Economics in Budapest in 1958, has devoted her life to research and teaching. She is Research Director at the Institute for World Economics of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences and Titular Professor at the Budapest University of Economics. Her main research areas are: international comparisons of the economic development levels and structures; infrastructures and services; and the analysis of industrialization and modernization processes in various countries. She acted as a short-term consultant for the UN Economic Commission for Europe in Geneva, where she spent the years 1980-82 as Director of the Projections and Programming Division. She is the author of several books on subjects that include the competition among countries in the world economy, the state of the infrastructure in the various countries, the catching up of Japan, and the fragile renewal in East-Central Europe. Gábor Révész, Doctor of Economic Sciences, who graduated from the University of Economics in Budapest in 1952, gained experience in state administration (at the Ministry of Fináncé and the National Planning Office) and in banking (at the Investment Bank), before becoming a researcher, and latterly a head of department at the Institute of Economics of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences.
