FROM HUNGARIAN REVIEW MARCH 2011 :
The Central European gas infrastructure was designed to transport gas from the exporter to an individual region on a country by country basis. There are very strong EastjWest pipeline links but practically no NorthlSouth ones in the region. That makes the region vulnerable and dependent on what is basically a single supply route. As a result, any one country could he threatened by interruption of its main supply link, as we experienced in 2009. To increase our energy security, we need to change this situation by diversifying sources of energy supplies. This will have obvious benefits for Europe as well

So - what to make of Germany's altogether rather positive official view of the Hungarian EU-Presidency, and the simultaneous, very critical stance of most German media and leftist politicians about Hungary itself? It might indicate some sort of disconnect between the ways German journalists and governing politicians see the matter. It might indicate diverging interests — shrill headlines may sell a paper, hut shrill politicians are usually ones without power.

I can't raise my children on irony. It's fitne, hut you have to stand somewhere When you know what a person stands for, what is sacred for them - it could be human rights and it could be transsubstantiation — you know who they are, and what they are. If all you have is irony, you have no idea what you are touching. You have no idea if they belong to a moral community - any moral community - or whether there is anything for which they would be willing to sacrifice their own interests. And I think that's the problem with irony.

The quality of the handiwork is breathtaking, and this is also true of the serial, machine-made pieces of furniture that were produced in the aforementioned large, family-owned enterprises. Interestingly, the latter also bear sensory or intellectual [i.e. artistic) meanings, hut the forms in which these meanings materialize are playful and mocking, due to the impersonal aesthetics of the machines.

For me Charon's Ferry, Bruce Berlind's beautiful translations of Gyula Illyés' poetry, is also a remarkable selection of last poems. Why call them "last poems" or read them in that way? If last poems form a genre - and Harold Bloom suggests that they do - this does not require that the poems be the last that their authors may have written. I can write a last poem at any age. I can write many last poems over many years. A poet. Bloom says, begins to write last poems when "lastness" for the poet becomes an active "part of knowing, " when in the light of this event and its compelling imaginative impulse, "the the" {as Stevens calls it) changes meaning.
