The Vienna-based Hungarian Institute for Sociology of Religion (Magyar Egyházszociológiai Intézet) was founded in 1957 by a young Jesuit who received assistance from similar Dutch and Austrian institutes. His ambition was to establish a research center on Austria's border with Hungary from which the developments of the silenced Hungarian Catholic Church could be observed and reported to the West. With the Institute's publication of numerous articles, studies, and books, a comprehensive view of the life and the general circumstances of the Church became available to concerned Western scholars, ecclesiastics and politicians. In 1992, the Institute opened its branch office, the Kerkai Jend Egyházszociológiai Intézet in Budapest. Through its research activity, the Institute intends to help rebuild a devastated Hungarian society and mend the shattered religious life of its people.
