This album presents the reader with an overview of Hungárián history as embodied by the eountry's eastles. A seholarlv introduction prepares the reader for a eomprehensive pietorial survey of Hungary's great eastles and their surviving remains. The reader ean alsó expeet something of a deteetive storv since eastles were continually rebuilt by their owners to meet changing needs, and what we see now ean often deceive the inexperienced eve. The album alsó tries to piece together just how people lived behind their fortified walls, and what artistie and philosophical ideas inspired their builders. Although many eastles of the past were destroyed - by the elements, by gunpowder, or beeausc later generations viewed them as convenient stone quarries - this book tries to offer the reader the most accuratc picture possible, by combining our knowledge from the surviving eastles, such as Sárospatak, Gyula, Siklós, Sárvár or Kőszeg, with the very latest archaeological findings and scholarship.... Introduction: Tibor Koppány is a qualificd arehiteetural cngineer, and before his rctircmcnt, was the planncr for restorát ion projects of the National Monument Proteetion Office, as wcll as an active a scholar. IIc is the rcctor of the Technical University, and sincc 1995, has occupicd the highest academic post at the university. He is alsó a member of the Hungárián Academy of Scicnccs. Since 1960, his writings have been eonsistentlv published in professional journals and in his own books. He was born in 1928. Main Text: Balázs Dercsényi is an art histórián, and graduate of the Budapest University of Humanitics. He has been involved in monument proteetion since 1963. He is the author of many works on Budapest and Hungary's protectcd buildings. He alsó works as a Consulting editor of films and television programmes. IIc was born in 1940. Photos: Ottó Kaiser is a frcelanee photographer, who has won many awards for his work. He is particularly known for his picturcs of citics and for his portraits. IIc is a member of the Hungárián Association of Photographers. IIc was born in 195.1.
