THIS copiously illustrated survey of sixty-five of the most interesting dwellings in Cornwall describes their history, architectural characteristics and gardens. The author has chosen her subjects mostly from among the larger houses but in order to give a feeling of the county as a whole she has included some representative smaller houses, cottages, and one fishing community. There are also a number of short pieces on yet more places of interest. She gives the reader a fascinating insight into the history of Cornwall from mediaeval times to the present day.
The book includes a list that gives details of which properties are open to the public, and further historical information is included in an appendix.

'CORNWALL does not have palaces like Bleinheim, but it has a large variety of historic houses, from castles and mansions to farmhouses and picturesque cottages — so many that in a lifetime of sight-seeing there are still some I have not known. Helen McCabe gives us a most valuable introduction to all these, with their fascinating stories of the lives lived within them.
