Hotline is a four-level course for teenagers. It may be started at beginner level (Hotline Starter) or false-beginner level (Hotline Elementary). Hotline takes students to an intermediate level of English.
Its key features are:
• a loopback syllabus. The course incorporates extensive recycling and revision of language, ensuring that what is studied is learnt, remembered and easily recalled when needed.
• a grammar-based analytical approach. Grammar is treated as a problem-solving activity and students are treated as thinkers who are guided to work out the rules of grammar for themselves.
• skills work. Ali the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are covered.
• project work. Through project work students are given the opportunity to talk and write about their life and to relate language to their own experience and aspirations.

The Student's Book for this level is accompanied by a Teacher's Book, a Workbook and a set of two audio cassettes.
Tom Hutchinson is the Associate Director of the Institute for English Language Education, Lancaster University, where he teaches mainly on teacher-training courses. He has given teacher-training seminars in many countries around the world.
Tom Hutchinson began his teaching career in a secondary school and has many years of experience teaching teenagers. He knows their interests and their needs.
Through his extensive experience in teacher training, healso understands what teachers require from a good language coursebook.
In 1986 he was awarded the Duke of Edinburgh's English Language prize for Project English.
