Introduction
The handover of power from Britain to the People's Republic of China, marked the final chapter in Hong Kong's 150 year colonial saga. Prophets of gloom had much in store for Hong Kong on midnight 30 June 1997, but despite the pessimists. Hong Kong (under a new name Hong Kong SAR, or Special Administrative Region) was quickly back to business, albeit under new management.
The city is an exciting ftision of east and west. The vast majority of people are Chinese, and their customs, folklore and language are Cantonese. The world of the Chinese - the noise, chaos, food and language - is everywhere, Intruding into this Chinese universe are familiar western symbols - Christian churches share the religious landscape with Taoist and Buddhist temples, while cosmopolitan restaurants punctuate the avenues of Cantonese food stalls. The meeting of these two worlds blends into a ripe and invigorating cocktail of colour, aroma and sensation.
Hong Kong has something for everyone. Shoppers will trip over themselves to reach the huge malls in Central, Admiralty, Causeway Bay and Kowloon. Romantic travellers will enjoy the nocturnal view over the waters of Victoria Harbour, and museums abound for those who wish to dig a bit deeper into local history and culture. Admirers of modem architecture can view Hong Kong's arresting Central district and for those who need more space, a bus ride can take you away to sandy beaches and secluded walks.
Hong Kong has surprising natural retreats for lovers of the big outdoors. A short ferry ride away is Lamma Island, an overgrown idyll that nature enthusiasts will find hard to resist. The New Territories cuts a huge swathe to the north, offering bracing walks among dramatic and spectacular countryside.
Hong Kong at night offers yet more. Lovers of good food will be spoilt for choice
