The argument which ensued after her broadcasts led Mrs Knight to look further into the nature of Christian morality, and she soon came to the conclusion that it was not what it was claimed to be. Christians who are prepared to acknowledge the wrongs and excesses committed by members of their faith usually say that such persons have departed from the true faith and morality of Christianity, that they have offended against Christianity no less than against man.
Mrs Knight argues that this is not so. The crimes of the Churches and of members of the Christian faith - intolerance, persecution, religious warfare, suppression of freedom of thought, other-worldly neglect of human well-being, and the subjugation of women — do not represent departures from New Testament teaching; they are rather the result of carrying it to its logical conclusion. The early history of the Church, far from proving a dawning of the light in a dark world, compared unfavourably both with Greek and Roman paganism and with Islam. Vissza
