HISTORYOF THE
US MARINES
Jack Murphy
'From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, We fight our country's battles in the air, on land, on
sea.'
The proud boasts of the US Marine Corps' hymn have been amply fulfilled in the Corps' history of over two centuries. The Marines' role in the capture of Mexico City in 1847 or in the pacification of the Barbary Pirates in 1805 so stirringly commemorated in the hymn helped establish a proud tradition of service which lasts to the present day. Many have questioned the value of an independent Marine Corps at various stages in its history but time and time again the Marines have confounded their opponents by their hard-won successes in battle. The Marines' slogan 'First to Fight' has been borne out in all of America's wars and conflicts from the massive efforts of the Pacific Marine Force in World War II to the more recent smaller-scale commitments in Beirut and Grenada.

History of the US Marines telis the whole dramatic story of the Corps and its battles from its earliest actions against the British through Indián wars at home and campaigns abroad against Mexicans and Spanish, to the two world wars of this century and the Koreán and Vietnam conflicts which followed. The Marines have not always been uniformly successful, as the bittér experience in Vietnam shows, but there have been few occasions indeed when the Marines' "few good men" have not lived up to their motto Semper Fidelis (always faithful). The exciting history of this elite branch of the US armed forces is authoritatively recounted by Jack Murphy and accompanied by many fine historical photographs and illustrations which make this a book no military buff could want to be without.
