The Great Western Railway Company was unique among the old railways existing prior to the grouping of 1923 in that it was not wound up, but continued in to the new era as the same corporate body ; and the present volume completes the history of the company down to its ultimate end, with the nationalisation of the British railways in 1948. MacDermot's history is one of the great classics of railway literature, but the story as continued and completed by Nock tells of fortunes and misfortunes of the G.W.R. in a changed world. From the high hopes of prosperity immediately following the grouping came the disastrous labour troubles of 1926, the years of acute trade depression, and of works undertaken for the relief of unemployment; the fight against road competition, and eventually the ordeal of World War II.
