English readers interested in Hun-garian literature have had until now no adequate source to which they could turn for a discussion of the fine and stimulating literature of a people whose language is spoken and understood by rela-tively few outside Hungary. As the last few years have seen the appearance in translations of a growing number of Hungarian works—fiction, poetry, antholo-gies—on the world book market, the time is ripe for presenting an overall picture to the reader whose ideas of Hungarian literature have been shaped by individual works which represent but small parts of the whole.
The present volume gives a comprehensive treatment of Hungarian literature from its earliest beginnings to the work of contem-porary writers. The three authors —each a well-known authority on a given period—have striven for falness and attempted at the same time to stress the trends and prob-lems which are of special interest to the English reader.
