THE NATION'S TREASURE
Britain can boast a unique heritage of historic houses ranging in size and opulence from magnificent palaces like Blenheim or Longleat to a rich and varied collection of smaller, exquisite manor houses, halls and casdes. A considerable number of these properties have passed into the care of such organisations as the National Trust, but there are still many v^hich are lived in today, many which are homes that have been occupied by the same family for generations and which preserve that essential 'lived-in' and loved quality that makes them especially interesting and appealing.
Some 1500 or so of these houses are owned by members the Historic Houses Association and just over 200 of them are regularly open to the public. It is these casdes, palaces and halls which are celebrated in this magnificent book.
The houses are fully described, each with an account of its history, what there is to see today and, because these places are about people too, we learn about who has lived there and who cares for the house today. High quality photographs and illustrations fill the pages with images of the treasures these houses contain.
Certain of the most exceptional houses receive more lavish treatment. Those of major architectural interest are illustrated with highly detailed cutaway drawings which allow the reader to envisage both the exterior and the interior. Where the family has lived in the same home for centuries the story of the family and their exploits is told to the present day and illustrated with family archive material.
The historic buildings in this book are not the echoing impersonal museums so often found now in Britain. Cherished as family homes, to visit them is to enjoy and appreciate living history, to understand how these houses have evolved over the centuries, how the stories of the families are interlinked with the stories of their houses, and how those links still remain to this day
