The Centre for Russian Studies of Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, held its eighth biennial international conference on 21-22 May 2012, entitled "Historians and the World - the World of Historians in Baissia and Central and Eastern Europe". The conference reminded us that the problems of the past are, in large part, the unanswered questions of today. We can learn a lot from the fate of fellow historians who lived and worked in the past. And their doubts are also our doubts.
We were concerned at the conference mainly with ourselves and with our area of expertise. Perhaps the conference has helped us identify new research topics, which we can now address with renewed vigour.
