EPICS, MYTHS AND LEGENDS
OF INDIA
By P. THOMAS
WITH A COLOURED FRONTISPIECE AND 268 BLACK-AND-WHITE ILLUSTRATIONS
This profusely illustrated work by Mr. Thomas is a comprehensive survey of the sacred lore of the Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. After a careful study of the various scriptures of these three great Indian religions, the author has arranged the material at his disposal in a way that will appeal to the student and the layman alike. In his classification of subjects he has adopted an original plan which is a distinguishing feature of the book. While the work reads like a novel, it contains the spiritual and philosophic conceptions of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, all told as myths and legends.
The two hundred and sixty-nine illustrations that make the book most attractive were selected with great care to represent the whole realm of Indian art, and form the cream of Hindu and Indo-Buddhist art. The Archaeological Departments of the Government of India and various... Tovább

The two hundred and sixty-nine illustrations that make the book most attractive were selected with great care to represent the whole realm of Indian art, and form the cream of Hindu and Indo-Buddhist art. The Archaeological Departments of the Government of India and various private collectors were approached for illustrations, and thus the selections are from various parts of the country and represent the ancient, medieval and modern world of art.
In short, this work is an unprecedented attempt to give the reader a faithful representation of the mythological systems and sacred traditions of this country in words and in pictures.

HINDU RELIGION, CUSTOMS AND MANNERS
This book is probably the only one of its kind which gives, in one volume, a complete picture of the Hindus. The religion, philosophy, customs and manners, ceremonials, feasts and festivals, the arts and sciences and even the superstitions of the Hindus are described with a wealth of detail in a most interesting manner.
Like his widely read previous work, Epics, Myths and Legends of India, this book by Mr. Thomas is intended for the general reader; but the scholar and the student will also find in it much that is enlightening. Mr. Thomas' flair for reducing the most abstruse conceptions into simple language makes even the chapters on philosophy, religion and astronomy, eminently readable.
Great care has been taken in selecting the 260 illustrations for the book ; all phases of Hindu life in the ancient, medieval and modem periods have been represented, due consideration having been given both to the purely Indian and the Indo-European points of view.
The appearance of this profusely illustrated monmnental work at a time when the Hindus are emerging out of comparative obscurity as the leading nation of the East is a landmark in the history of the race.
