High Hills and Wild Goats is an entertaining
and intimate look at some of the rarest animals
in the world and at the continuing battle for their
preservation. Located deep in Israel's Negev
Desert, Hai-Bar is a unique animal preserve dedi-
cated to restoring critically endangered species
to the wild. Within its boundaries roam stubborn
onagers, mean-spirited ostriches, nimble ibex,
and beautiful white oryx. Drawn together from
zoos and natural ranges all over the world, these
threatened species are taught to function in
herds and to defend themselves against the nat-
ural dangers of the desert. Gradually, they learn
to be wild again, to live freely in the open spaces
of the Negev.
Bill Clark, former curator of Hai-Bar, brings
the animals and their antics to vivid life in these
pages. Through his ongoing battle of wits with
this exotic menagerie we meet, among others,
Napoleon, an old scimitar-horned oryx who
won't give up on the ladies; J.R. and Buba, a pair... Tovább

Bill Clark, former curator of Hai-Bar, brings
the animals and their antics to vivid life in these
pages. Through his ongoing battle of wits with
this exotic menagerie we meet, among others,
Napoleon, an old scimitar-horned oryx who
won't give up on the ladies; J.R. and Buba, a pair
of ibex kids raised in the Clarks' living room; Bon-
nie and Clyde, a duo of thieving ostriches; Hum-
baba, the elusive Judean Desert leopard; and
Cinderella, a rare white oryx, the breed believed
to be the biblical unicorn. With humor and a
keen eye for each animal's true character, Bill
Clark re-creates the fascinating world of Hai-Bar.
At a time when the need to preserve the natu-
ral heritage of our world has reached a crisis
point, Bill Clark's hilarious and touching narra-
tive reveals the deeper purpose of his work—
the restoration of the animals of the Bible to the
Land of the Bible. In a country beset by constant
political turmoil, Hai-Bar has been extraordinar-
ily successful because of a national commitment
to the conservation of native wildlife. That com-
mitment is at the heart of High Hills and Wild
Goats, as Bill Clark reveals with anecdote and
insight the wonderful character of these animals
and the urgent need for their preservation.
