What manner of man was Winston
Churchill ? Orator, statesman, warrior,
painter—and, not least, writer. He has
said, in telling of his early years, "I got into
my bones the essential structure of the
ordinary English sentence—which is a
noble thing." How noble the readers of
this book will find, to their pleasure and
inspiration, on every page.
For Winston Churchill history was no
dead recital of things past. It was real and
living—and, above all, it was about people.
And for him, cast in the heroic mould, it
was the heroes of history who gave life and
reality to the fabric of events.
Here, then, are thirteen of Sir Winston's
favourite characters in history—kings and
queens, soldiers and sailors, saints and
statesmen. Their stories are told exclusively
in his own incomparable words from the
pages of his four-volume History of the
English-Speaking Peoples. This means,
inevitably, that much of his explanatory
material in so long a work has been left out.

For Winston Churchill history was no

And for him, cast in the heroic mould, it
was the heroes of history who gave life and

in his own incomparable words from the
pages of his four-volume History of the
English-Speaking Peoples. This means,
inevitably, that much of his explanatory
material in so long a work has been left out.
This background is presented, where it has
seemed necessary, in marginal notes. And
to complete the picture, there is a profile of
Sir Winston himself, perhaps the greatest
hero of them all, drawn from his own
autobiographical writings and from his
speeches.
Each of the fourteen sections is accom-
panied by a superb full-colour painting,
spread across two pages, depicting in the
form of an ingenious modern tapestry the
life and times of each of these heroic
characters. Each picture is presented with
a lengthy caption setting out the events
recorded in the painting.
This splendid book will be a delight to
young and old, for Sir Winston's beauti-
fully simple, majestic prose is as well
attuned to the understanding of intelligent
young people as to more mature generations.
It is indeed a book of delights for all who
would savour the glories of the heritage
of the English-speaking peoples. Vissza
