Architecture is a form of art that must be perceived spatially. In order to understand shapes, structures and volumes, and to make intelligible the interplay of mass, solids and space without which no construction could exist, we must look at plans, cross sections and vertical sections.

Pour en comprendre les formes, les structures et les volumes, pour rendre intelligible ce jeu de masses, de pleins et de vides, sans lesquels aucune construction ne saurait exister, il n'est d'autre moyen que de recourir aux plans, coupes et élévations.
Si le plan nous aide a comprendre les édifices, il est également un moyen d'interpréter l'histoire d'une architecture: c'est par la comparaison de plans successifs d'édifices analogues que l'ont saisit les grandes lignes de l'évolution vers laquelle tend presque inconsciemment une civilisation. Ce que ne peut exprimer une perception vécue des édifices, la lecture des plans permet de le rendre intelligible.
Mais si une telle comparaison est fructueuse a l'intérieur de chaque culture, combien l'estelle plus encore si l'on dispose d'un instrument qui offre un résumé analytique de toutes les grandes périodes de l'activité architecturale. La réduction a une meme méthode d'approche pour les ouvres caractéristiques de tous les peuples bâtisseurs, le traitement de tous les types d'édifices selon les memes normes graphiques, la possibilité de comparer des civilisations souvent fort éloignées, tels sont les ressources qu'apporte la présente publication.
Pour donner plus de corps a ces symboles quelque peu abstraits que sont les plans, l'ouvrage comporte des documents en couleurs présentant, pour chaque civilisation, quelques créations typiques ou essentielles. Une breve introduction situe le cadre historique et technologique de chaque époque ou culture importante. De plus, chaque page de plan est accompagnée d'une légende développée.
