In the tenth century, with jewels in their hair and weapons set with precious stones, the Magyars con-quered and settled in what is now Hungary. At the end of the seventeenth century Hungárián nobles still ornamented their magnificent clothing with
enamel and jewels. The history of the craft of the goldsmith during the intervening centuries is one of the most colourful chapters in the cultural history of Hungary—it is told in this book. The author looks back on the Hungárián goldsmith as a creator of unique and beautiful artifacts and as a contributor to his country's social
and political past.
